Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats or independents to rate their mental health as excellent, according to data from the last four November Gallup Health and Healthcare polls. Fifty-eight percent of Republicans report having excellent mental health, compared to 43% of independents and 38% of Democrats. This relationship between party identification and reports of excellent mental health persists even within categories of income, age, gender, church attendance, and education.

I guess republicans aren't burdened by "liberal guilt."

  2. What incentive does anybody have of rating their own mental health as excellent?

    Self-reporting on one's self-image is now a scientific measure?

Yeah, it would be interesting to see what conclusions outside observers (psychologists) would come to.

The Ideological Animal We think our political stance is the product of reason, but we're easily manipulated and surprisingly malleable. Our essential political self is more a stew of childhood temperament, education, and fear of death. Call it the 9/11 effect.

It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society. Krishnamurti.

Here's a slightly more amusing study:

"Remember the whiny, insecure kid in nursery school, the one who always thought everyone was out to get him, and was always running to the teacher with complaints? Chances are he grew up to be a conservative.

At least, he did if he was one of 95 kids from the Berkeley area that social scientists have been tracking for the last 20 years. The confident, resilient, self-reliant kids mostly grew up to be liberals."

  8. Trying to market "good" mood, while having a marketplace which actively destroys the stability of mood, might create some need to deceive. Not to mention that a "good" or "bad" mood is ethics, not psychology. Just like "good" or "bad" weather is not meteorology.

  9. Insecurity is the new cool. Doesn't matter the political bent.
