Someone's not happy about it because this is the first time I've read about bitcoins in use.
"Underground Website Lets You Buy Any Drug Imaginable"
Crazy to think they were worth less than a cent originally and hackers and nerds were racking them up by the thousand. Now they're worth $18 each. The whole thing could easily come crashing down or it could be one of the biggest economic developments in history. A big question is whether the government could even shut it down if they wanted to, because it's structured like bitorrent.
Right now, there are probably a bunch of 16 year old kids who are worth six figures in their bitcoin wallets.

Bitcoin is the Economic Singularity
http://astrohacker.com/ahc/bitcoin-is-the-economic...
Bitcoin transactions leave a record of times and amounts, but not identities, and Silk Road can only be reached through an identity-cloaking computer network called Tor. There's no way to determine the identity of its administrators and since sellers only accept Bitcoins for their wares, they can't be found, either (so long as packages are mailed discretely).

Feels like Second Life meets a digital slot machine. Videogame wackness. Fairly likely it would get shut down the moment it was viewed by industry as a serious threat. But really it's more like farmville.
Astrohacker dude was heralding the coming of the economic apocalypse. Wacky. Many realities complicating his fantasy of economic salvation.
But seriously, it's an interesting development. Gets the gears turning. Sounds like any drama about this might play out soon.
As befitting a virtual currency, no one is quite sure who created the Bitcoin. A white paper and software turned up three years ago listing Satoshi Nakamoto as the author. That's presumed to be a pseudonym. All that's known about Nakamoto, based on his paper and message board comments, is that he's fluent in English and has a deep understanding of Internet security.
That has a mildly ominous hue to it. No reason to be surprised if this was secretly being run by BofA or the NSA. Sounds like it may be setting off a few alarms already. I envision that software being a plugin to their data mining software. All interactions will be monitored in real time by someone not in the friendly video. Feeding us our revolutionary moments.
