Burglars struck the Sixth Floor Museum in downtown Dallas this morning, yanking out a safe before running away when they were confronted by a security guard.
The incident began about 4 a.m. when two men used a winch mounted in an old Dodge pickup to remove the safe from the ground floor of the museum, which is dedicated to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
Minutes later, a Dallas County security officer spotted the two men trying to drive away in a second pickup, a white 1990 Chevy that was reported stolen overnight in Pleasant Grove.
When the pickup drove toward him, he fired at the suspects, who abandoned the Chevy and jumped into the Dodge, said Kim Leach, a spokeswoman for the Dallas County Sheriff's Department.
With the safe still hanging from the Dodge's winch, the men hit a tree and crashed onto a curb in the 400 block of Elm Street, she said.
Leach said they abandoned the undrivable pickup and fled in separate directions. They remain at large. A detailed description of the suspects was not available.
No injuries were reported, and there was no indication that the burglars disturbed any of the museum's exhibits.
The museum will be closed today while authorities investigate the break-in.

Add this to the Erykah Badu stripping and Dealey Plaza has become a bit of a circus at this point.
