New Jersey corruption sweep reveals 'pervasive' web of money laundering, bribes

NEWARK -- The wide-ranging, 10-year probe of New Jersey corruption that led to charges against 44 people today stems from the "pervasive nature of public corruption in this state," acting U.S. Attorney Ralph Marra said today during a press conference in Newark.
The investigation has led to charges against prominent politicians including Assemblymen L. Harvey Smith (D-Hudson) and Daniel Van Pelt (R-Monmouth), Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, and Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez.
"The politicians willingly put themselves up for sale," Marra said. "For these defendants, corruption was a way of life. They existed in an ethics-free zone."
Rabbis from the Syrian Jewish enclaves of Deal and Brooklyn were also arrested and charged with laundering $3 million through religious non-profit organizations in the past two years through a witness that cooperated with FBI and IRS investigators, Marra said.
"These rings, led by clergymen, cloaked their extensive criminal activity," Marra said. "The rings were international in scope, connected to Deal, N.J., Brooklyn, Israel and Switzerland. The victims are the average citizens and the honest businesspeople of this state,"

Every incumbent in the state should be voted out of office. I cannot believe this scope and level of corruption existed and the politicians not indicted today were unaware. They all knew, they know where it still exists and they're lying to us by omission. Our new elected officials should demand the resignations of every appointed official in the state and start over. Nothing less will clean up this mess.
