The only chance we have as a country... (3 posts)

"The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama Bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States." - Michael Scheuer, head of the CIA's Osama Bin Laden unit from 1996 to 1999 - during an interview interview with Glenn Beck.

    These are mighty dangerous sentiments.

It appears the far-right in america openly seeks violence against the american public - for our own good - so we can return to the safety of daddy's arms - and hyper-reactionary politics - and police state tactics - and unitary executive privilages - and a crushing Iranian-like reaction to put down all political dissent.

Yes - that is what these cowards claim will make us safe.

It is interesting that there are THOSE who take umbrage with the 9/11 Truth movement. There are THOSE who are angered with the suggestion that we demand accountability for the 9/11 attacks that were allowed to further the militaristic agenda, and police state tactics, meticulously spelled out by PNAC. There are THOSE who would say that these aims are the result of 'conspiracy theories' not to be taken seriously.

But where are THOSE people today? Where are our critics today when it appears that the right-wing of this nation openly and explicitly claim that 'the only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama Bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States?'

Where are all those people today condemning the actions of a multi-billion dollar news media empire REPEATEDLY endorsing and sponsoring the voices of a modern day FIFTH COLUMN - offering comfort and aid to the enemy - by using their privilaged place in the media to spread propganda that openly declares that Osama Bin Laden may be the only chance we have to save america?

They openly depict terrorism as a means towards an end. They openly depict violence as a necessary evil to save america?

They put out a thinly-veiled trumpeted call to all domestic terrorists to 'save america' by staging violence against american cities in the name of Al Qaeda?

They DO know that people are listening - right? They DO know they are whipping their audience up into a fear-induced frenzy - right? They DO know that nightly calls for justice for a 'baby killer' contributed violent vitriol to a national dialogue that resulted in cold blooded murder - right?

They DO know they have a RESPONSIBILITY to the public to maintain calm and remain responsible in their their broadcasting - right?

"The only chance we have as a country right now is for Osama Bin Laden to deploy and detonate a major weapon in the United States."

While there are THOSE who would call 9/11 Truth activists anti-american for concerning themselves with the facts behind the 9/11 attacks - we now wonder where THOSE people are today when the very spectre of - and a virtual call for - a mass-casualty terrorist attack is broadcast on national TV to millions of reactionary viewers worldwide.

And when and if that attack comes - and the far right revels in their 'i told you so' moment of self-fullfilling prophecy - will THOSE people criticize the aims of a Truth Movement once again - and turn their backs on the issue of accountability - yet again?

Those of us who still possess a modicum of sanity hope and pray that we never find out.

Scheuer has never explained why Alec Station withheld the fact that known al Qaeda operatives were inside the US. Yet he has probably been the most vocal alarmist in regards to the threat posed by Bin Laden/al Qaeda. One must ask--if al Qaeda was as dangerous as Scheuer has alleged then why did Alec Station let al-Hazmi and al-Mihdhar roam around the US for 20 months? In an Antiwar interview he answered this contradiction by blaming the FBI's outdated computer system. An absurd answer.

For sure, he makes some good points about US foreign policy. Some of his points are similar to those of William Blum. Strangely, the work of Blum and Scheuer was mentioned in Bin Laden recordings (granted their authenticity is rather questionable). Of course, his views in other areas are vastly different from Blum's. For example, Scheuer's support for the use of torture.

I don't question intent. For example, there is consensus along the political spectrum (Ron Paul, Noam Chomsky) regarding the motives (i.e. anger at US foreign policy in the Middle East). The other aspect is capability and this is something Scheuer refuses to address. If al Qaeda operatives were deliberately protected from surveillance/arrest/deportation then the true capability of al Qaeda is unknown. Instead of a real investigation of 9/11 we got propaganda and fearmongering. The officials who have not accounted for their conduct are the same people claiming they simply had to have police state powers to prevent terrorist attacks.

Why isn't Scheuer's patriotism up for review?

    Well said, JohnA:

Scheuer and Beck would seem to be insane- or crazy like foxes. Thank god for the web- this nutball quote is getting circulation. There's a significant minority percentage that subscribe to this ideology, but I think this discredits them in the eyes of most people. This kind of fear-mongering will turn people off and open their minds to alternative/independent news and views. If there's an attack that outdoes 9/11- another attack that our DOD 'fails' to stop- it will certainly be grabbed at by the right wing and Cheney's stay-behind operation- but it will also drive even more people to organize for transparency, accountability, truth and justice in the system. Another attack will underscore even more the failure of the Establishment and the fake parties- Obama has essentially continued most of Bush's policies
