    Extremism, Conspiracy Theory And Murder

Listen Now [36 min 22 sec] add to playlist | download

Fresh Air from WHYY, June 18, 2009 · Chip Berlet has studied extremism, conspiracy theories and hate groups for more than 25 years. In a recent report for PublicEye.org, he says that the murders of abortion provider Dr. George Tiller and Holocaust Museum guard Stephen T. Johns exemplify the potential for violence that often lurks within extremist groups.

Berlet argues that right-wing pundits share some of the moral responsibility for the actions of their followers. He summarizes the analysis in his report in a June 10 Huffington Post article about Johns' murder: "Apocalyptic aggression is fueled by right-wing pundits who demonize scapegoated groups and individuals in our society, implying that it is urgent to stop them from wrecking the nation."

Berlet is a senior analyst at Political Research Associates, a Boston-area-based think tank, and the co-author of Right-Wing Populism in America: Too Close for Comfort. He is also the editor of Eyes Right! Challenging the Right Wing Backlash.

Right Woos Left: professional anti-conspiracist Chip Berlet defends Bush regime's 9/11 claim of "surprise attack"

Chip Berlet, "leftist" professional anti-conspiracist who defends the official 9/11 conspiracy theory, calls oilempire webmaster "essentially an industrious rumor-mongerer with a penchant for conspiracy theories"

    ...

Political Research Associates page denouncing "conspiracies" about 9-11 http://www.publiceye.org/conspire/conspiracism-911...

This page insinuates that the "9/11skeptics" movement largely consists of anti-semites, far-right fanatics and holocaust denial people. Yes, those sites do exist, but one could make a very good case that several of them are "false flag" operations to provide rhetorical ammunition to attack the idea that the Bush regime allowed 9/11 or gave it technical assistance to ensure it succeeded.

PRA has resisted numerous opportunities to discuss the credible evidence that 9/11 was not a surprise attack, refusing to discuss:

    • prior warnings by allied governments

    • warnings to political, military and corporate officials to get out of the way

    • the NORAD wargames that confused the Air Force response

    • the CIA / NRO wargames on 9/11

    • the motivations of Peak Oil and "Homeland Security"

    • anthrax attacks on the Democrats and passage of the Patriot Act

If the racists on the web didn't exist, groups like PRA would have to invent them.

After trashing 9/11 skeptics as racists and anti-semites, Mr. Berlet then mentions Mike Ruppert, and provides the liberal establishment "party line":

"Ruppert, however, makes sweeping claims that cannot be verified at a time when there is some much verifiable wrongdoing by the government and corporations that the outcome, no matter how unintentional, is that Ruppert’s allegations serve to distract from serious progressive opposition to the status quo and sometimes even discredit it."

However, Berlet does not cite a single "unverifiable claim" by Ruppert to justify his comments. Berlet's page spends more energy pointing out that anti-semites believe there was a conspiracy on 9/11 than discussing the credible evidence of complicity. It's a relatively clever smear campaign.

    Finally, Berlet states that

"There are many unanswered questions about the attacks on 09/11/01, the obvious failures of existing security systems, the decisions regarding the assessment of terrorist threats; the wisdom, morality, and legality under international law of the unilateral attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq; the implementation of repressive domestic measures such as the Patriot Act and the confinement of immigrants and undocumented visitors without due process; and the reluctance and refusal of key government officials to fully cooperate with congressional and media investigations. Political Research Associates fully supports the vigorous investigation of these matters."

Despite the alleged support for "vigorous investigation of these matters," PRA doesn't provide any actual links to the independent investigations, not even to the most credible efforts such as the "Complete 9/11 Timeline," a database of over 1,000 mass media articles that show beyond any doubt that 9/11 was not a surprise attack.

Good old Chip Berlet. He sounds so reasonable and he's on our side right?, against the whacko right-wingers.

I don't trust Chippy as far as I can throw him since the Kennebunkport Hoax. Tarpley was far too quick to throw us in "with Chip Berlet"--a guy I never heard of.

Berlet was far too quick to take umbrage at the idea that he and/ or his foundation, was part of the con.

And one of the fake "sane truthers" who claimed to be stalked was too quick to defend Berlet as a nice guy we should be allies with.

    Give me a bloody break.

Interestingly, he made a comment about how the 9/11 groups have done a good job of keeping themselves separated from the anti-semites, or something, so I will need to transcribe that to fight the wikipedia information war where they are trying to keep forcing it on the 9/11 Truth Movement page. Everyday they are trying to find a new way. Someone added the last sentence there, but it keeps being removed or weighed down with tags or quotes to make it appear as something else.

Adherents of the 9/11 Truth movement come from diverse social backgrounds.[8][26][29] Many adherents are politically liberal, while the movement also includes people on the right, especially anti-government libertarians.[10][23][29] According to Christopher Hodapp and Alice Von Kannon, anti-Semites have joined the movement,[30] and accusations of anti-Semitism have been directed against the 9/11 Truth movement.[31] Several truth movement websites and organizations maintain statements and pages explicitly rejecting Holocaust Denial, anti-semitism and other forms of racism.[32][33][34]

I think he makes several good points. That said, he seems to have a view on 9/11 which one finds among some debunkers. All skepticism is focused on those who dare to challenge official findings. Conduct of 9/11 skeptics is scrutinized while conduct of government officials is ignored or passed off as incompetence. I have no problem with scrutiny at all. It becomes a double standard when one refuses to hold the government to a similar standard of conduct. IMO government officials should be held to a higher standard of conduct.

    anti-government libertarians

Freakin' wiki...libertarians are not "anti-government". We just have a different idea about the role of government. Anti-government types are called "anarchists", and that's entirely different.
