Watergate and Daniel Ellsberg conspiracy theories (2 posts)

The gist of these theories is that Watergate was perhaps a CIA induced scandal to draw attention away from the more sinister operations of the Agency. Liddy and Hunt maybe intentionally botched the burglary in order to take down Nixon? It is pretty incredible that they took pictures of themselves outside of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist's office before carrying out a burglary there--and then had the pictures developed by the CIA.

It all does sound so innocent--bugging, burglaries, disguises--in comparison to international drug smuggling, killing millions of innocents, coups, assassinations, etc.

The other level of theorizing in the links below is that Daniel Ellsberg also released (or was encouraged to) the Pentagon Papers in order to distract the country/media from the more serious black ops, such as CIA linked drug smuggling. The "revelations" in the Pentagon Papers are pretty tame compared to what most of us know about. His best buddies in Vietnam, according to this article were CIA agents possibly involved in drug operations, namely Lucien Conein and Frank Scotton. He was in Vietnam as part of a team headed by Edward Lansdale (CIA), and I have no doubt that he probably associated with other agents there.

But when I read his book, I did notice that he gives the CIA a free ride--almost no critique. He's also very secretive and obscure about certain times and associations.

I remember John Judge saying that he heard Ellsberg say that he was 15 levels above top security clearance at the Pentagon back in the seventies. Now he apparently no longer admits to this. I think it is safe to say that if the NY Times printed it, then there is some sort of agenda behind it. The Pentagon Papers do not contain nearly as much about Nixon's administration and far more about Johnson and Kennedy. In Jim Hougan's book Secret Agenda, he says that the Pentagon Papers were not even taken as a threat at first by Nixon and that it was Kissinger who conjured up Nixon's paranoia about them.

According to the book Secret Agenda, Hunt and McCord were CIA agents who had infiltrated the White House operations and were there to compromise Nixon. According to people like McCord and Admiral Thomas Moorer (on the board of Western Goals), Nixon was going in the wrong direction by moving towards detente with the Soviets and improving relations with China. Much of this was the result of Kissinger, who many on the far right (including James Angleton) believed that he was a legitimate communist agent.

Mae Brussell said that Nixon was taken out by the CIA because the CIA would have lost considerable power under the Tom Charles Huston Plan. It planned for the consolidation of the FBI and the CIA under the umbrella of the Pentagon. Taking Nixon out prevented this consolidation at the time.
