Technical Difficulties - Heavy traffic (7 posts)

Our traffic has gone down in the past few days and we suspect that it might be due to a CPU overage warning that we keep seeing. We are working to determine the cause of this problem and hope to have things running smoothly before long.

Generally if you wait a couple of minutes, you can get to the site when you try again.

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

I bet it's a combination of the code running the site not being very optimised and lots of robots using lots of bandwidth and CPU, not real people accessing the site...

Yeah, we get a lot of hits from google image searches...that may have something to do with it. Also, the whole site is dynamically created with xml and xslt and we may have some inefficient processes running.

If I were you I'd get a dedicated server, either physically buy or lease one or lease a virtual one, this would mean that:

    • You wouldn't have a CPU quota (though with a virtual server this could still be an issue)
    • You would be able to set up an encrypted partition for sensitive info like the database and logs
    • You would be able to run the site via https - this would mean that people's passwords wouldn't be submitted in the clear and snooping the traffic to the site would be harder

It always makes me feel uncomfortable to login into any site using http rather than https...

You might also want to consider where the power comes from, there are companies offering solar powered virtual servers, eg: http://www.aiso.net/ (I'm not suggesting these people, they were just the first hit I got when I searched for solar powered virtual servers...).

I still get the 'quota exceeded' message about every other time I'm on here, usually when I'm about to post my comment.

One thing we found w/ our sites was that others were linking directly to videos on our site -- I forget what it's called -- so we had to disable that. Made a large diff.

It's really worthwhile taking 15 minutes to talk on the phone w/ the hosting support. You shouldn't need a dedicated server or anything with this size website.

Thanks, Victronix. Our webmaster was going to look into updating our code and we had instituted some temporary fixes, but I don't think they've been that effective. I'll call our host and see if they've got any advice...

We were down for labor day. Very sorry, our host was unavailable for the holiday. But on the upside, talking to them (they were back on the job at 12am) should have cleared up our CPU quota issues. It had something to do with optimizing our databases, hopefully.

If anyone still gets the error message, please let us know.

    Thanks for your patience.

(UPDATE: Looks like I'm still getting the error...)
