"Eco Terrorism" suspect gets 20 years (6 posts)

It seems the plot revolved around a young FBI informant known as "Anna."

The FBI supplied Anna with a ’96 Chevy Lumina, and gas money, and food money, to drive Jenson and Weiner across the country and meet McDavid. There, the FBI paid for a cabin. And on top of that, the FBI supplied bomb-making recipes and materials.

And Elle magazine does an exposé on the informant and case, then retracts the story:

Following consultation with federal agencies, we at Elle wish to retract this article. Not because of the stream of factual inaccuracies beginning in the second sentence (there has never been a CrimethInc. convergence in Athens, Georgia), but because in the current political climate it is irresponsible to even pretend to give a fair hearing to radical anti-capitalists. Even if Anna’s story is a cut-and-dried case of entrapment, we have to understand this as a necessary defense of our free market freedoms.

Um, I'm thinking it is highly likely that the "retraction" is a (rather brilliant) hoax. A nicely formatted, reproduceable pdf of the sticker which has been found in some issues of Elle is available here: http://thecloud.crimethinc.com/pdfs/elle_retractio... I think the last sentence is the clincher:

Not to say that we are not concerned about the environment at Elle. On the contrary, the global environmental crisis offers unprecedented opportunities to promote sustainable fashions (p. 98), give the meat industry a makeover (p. 245), and renew faith in this country’s discredited electoral process (p. 104); even the color green itself is making a comeback (p. 72). Consumer capitalism may be threatening life on earth, but there’s simply no other option—that is, not unless you’re willing to join the ranks of the eco-terrorists.

Disgusting. No crime is beneath glorification (in this case as fashion), if it's on behalf of the state.

How many "Annas" do you figure we've each met?

Wow, it sounds like the hoax was extensively promulgated (according to comments at the ecorazzi site). I would really like to have a magic ball to see how this went down. I imagine statements like this contribute:

A terrible shame Submitted by Anonymous on Tue, 05/06/2008 - 20:39.

This is just downright unamerican. Here is a scan of the sticker: http://thecloud.crimethinc.com/pdfs/elle_retractio... Of course, NO ONE should print this out and sticker it on other Elle magazines. It's not even funny, so don't even think about it. You could get in big trouble.

From a blog post describing the action as "vandalism" http://www.foliomag.com/2008/activists-vandalize-e...

So so wrong. This culture is disgusting. Definitely, there are Anna's everywhere. And the average American is so scared by threats to their worldview (their "way of life"), that they happily go along with killing 1 million in Iraq or destroying the planet and throwing in jail anyone who attempts to stop the insanity.

Clearly the environmentalists are a threat because they're right and their rightness only becomes more blatantly clear as the natural world and the economies based on raping it begin to collapse.

Hmmm. Anyone see a breakdown in logic here?

Eric McDavid was sentenced to nearly 20 years in prison on Thursday, as a “terrorist,” for conspiring to sabotage federal facilities in the name of the environment.

    Nearly 20 years.

That number is shocking enough, considering that the average sentence for violent offenders, in 2004, was about 7.6 years.
